A way to emphasize fine art photography is to add a border using Adobe Photoshop. This gives a sense of elegance and exclusivity if done correctly. Learn how you can automate the process of creating borders in Photoshop using actions.
How to Add a Border in Photoshop?
A common way of doing this is to resize the canvas size while keeping the photo in the center of the canvas. Next, you can add a background layer and give it a solid color, which will give an elegant border effect.
What are Photoshop Border Actions?
By running an action in Photoshop, you can skip the manual work with creating borders. This also ensures that the borders you add look identical from image to image. It also opens up the possibility to batch process a whole folder of images with just a few clicks.
How to use Photoshop Photo Border Actions?
If you want to apply an action to your image, just press the play button and Photoshop plays the action and does the rest for you. Our Photoshop actions leave the original intact and make a copy of the photo layer, and inserts a solid color layer under the copy, and then resizes the canvas size. Thereby you get a beautiful fine art border, without damaging the original image.
After running the action, you can find the photo layer with an added stroke effect plus the border layer in the layers panel. By double-clicking on the border layer, you can change the border color to anything you like. Our actions per default add either black or white borders, which is common in fine art photography.
Which Border Actions are included in Photography-RAW’s action package?
Black border Photoshop actions:
- Black border action – Narrow (adds 1 cm black border by increasing the width and height of the canvas size)
- Black border action – Narrow (creates a 5% border, but keeps the size (thus making the photo a bit smaller).
- Black border action – Medium (adds 2 cm by increasing the canvas size).
- Black border action – Medium (creates a 10% border, but keeps the size; thus making the photo a bit smaller).
- Black border – Wide
White border Photoshop actions:
- White border action – Narrow (adds 1cm by increasing the width and height of the canvas size)
- White border action – Narrow (creates a 5% border, but keeps the size (thus making the photo a bit smaller).
- White border action – Medium (creates a 10% border, but keeps the size; thus making the photo a bit smaller).
- White border action – Medium (adds 2 cm by increasing the image canvas size).
- White border – Wide
Each of the above actions comes with a fine stroke (between the photo and the border), which gives a nice elegant and exclusive touch to the border. Adding a stroke is a common visual element for adding a simplistic look when adding frames and borders to your fine art photography.
For the black border actions, the stroke color is white. For the white border actions, the stroke color is black.
You can modify or remove this stroke, or tell Photoshop to skip this step in the action if you don’t want it.
Why not just use free Photoshop border actions?
First of all, when working with fine art, and creating a portfolio, you want to aim for consistency, and actions that continue to work, even though you update to a newer version of Photoshop CC. With actions that you download for free, you often don’t get any support or have any assurance of the quality. With the actions you get from Photography-RAW, you do have support + a 60 days money-back guarantee.
Photoshop Border actions with a free download license, may work now, but not in the future. Photography-RAW continues to update actions should they fail for working with future versions of Photoshop (* with the exception of Photoshop disabling the features used – in which case, we will try to recreate the effect using different tools in Photoshop).
Secondly, our Photoshop action sets are more than just frame actions and border actions. You get a total of over 60 different actions, ranging from black and white actions, Faux HDR actions, Matte actions, vintage effects, and a bundle of workflow actions that helps you process your images faster.
We will continue to build this package, which means that once you have purchased this package, you get additional free photoshop actions when we create them and add them to this package.
